hard gear shifting ==> cured with TCM replacement ?

Hi everybody,
as many 2004 Touareg (V6 and V drivers, I am not very satiesfied with the gear shifting quality. My original transmission was replaced last year, due to internal mechanical fault.
With the OEM remanufactured transmission (assuming with new valve body) they put on my Touareg, the gear shift behaviour became definitely better than before, but I cannot say that it is "smooth". Reseting the transmission control module (TCM) improves the trans shifting for 3-4 days, but afterwards it is bad again. Sometimes all gears are affected, but mostly 2 ==> 3 and 4 ==> 5 and sometimes the well known "hard downshift from 5 ==> 4" happens as well.

I read many threats about
- poor shifting quality on 2004 Touaregs
- SW update which (sometimes) cured this problem
- replaced valve bodies
but I did NOT read any threats about "replaced TCMs".

I definitely have the latest SW update on my TCM, the dealer verified it already twice.

So my questions are
1.) who has received a new TCM so far ?
2.) what was the reason for the TCM replacement ?
3.) how did the dealer detect the TCM fault ? (unfortunately very often no fault entries are found)
4.) did it improve the gear shifting quality ?

Thanks in advance.

btw: Thanks to "GoozieNZ". He brought me to the idea that maybe the TCM could be faulty and not the transmission itself.

The thing that has helped out a lot with it shifting smoother was to change the transmission coding to the Euro coding. You would have to know someone with a VAG Com cable and software to do it for you. I doubt seriously the dealer will even touch it. I believe, for it has been awhile, the stock coding is 4156 and I changed it to 4200. It has been a lot smoother shifting and even seems to hold the gears longer when trying to pass on the highway. Others have changed this coding and noticed smoother shifting as well, it may be worth a shot.

I perfomed this mod 3 weeks ago. I noticed an improvement, but the shifting quality is still not there where I expect it should be.

Not sure what to tell you then. You may still be having an issue somewhere unless it is functioning as it should and just not to your liking.
