My new V8 2005 had a dead battery the other day at 800 miles.Dealer told me no problem with battery but had a software update for car that was completed.I'm not sure if they did anything, weather was warm and car kept in garage.Anyone have any updates or info.

Ask the dealer to check for voltage drop on the cable between the alternator and battery. There is an issue with this and it allows the charging rate to drop to very low levels, not allowing the battery to charge and causing a dead battery.

Do you know if this voltage drop would be visible on the volt gauge, such as lower than 14 volts with engine running? One thing that really bothers me about this vehicle is the "dead battery" issue.

I have close to 7000 miles on my Touareg and I have no issues yet. Absolutely love the Treg so far.

I guess if it is 13 to 13.5 you are in the trouble range. This problem is said to affect V8 models only and there is a TSB coming out on it soon.

Thanks. Not too impressed with the battery location on this vehicle, especially if there is an issue with it.

From what I've read, the bad part of the cable is at the terminal at the alternator. I don't care for the battery location either. But at least VW was kind enough to give us jumper terminals under the hood. I had an 1985 Audi 200 that had its battery under the rear seat. It took the removal of a couple of screws to pull up the cushion if you needed to jump the battery.

Ask your dealer if this was a NAV update to disable the traffic feature in RDS. I asked that they look at my vehicle for the harness that Spock eluded to during my last service. Instead, they performed the NAV flash. According to the manager, this is supposed to be a new TSB. I haven't seen my gauge dip below 14v........yet.

dead battery

Do you have any aftermarket products like an xm radio or radar detector? If so, it will drain your battery even though they are turned off and they cannot yet fix it...It's part of the load intervention management.
