Looking at a 2007 V10 Touareg...

We've been speaking with a dealer about a 2007 V10 Touareg. The out-the-door price is $14,427, and we plan on purchasing a warranty for $2,000 (36,000 miles or 3 years). It currently has 129,000 miles and has had 5 previous owners, according to the CarFax. It was a trade-in to the dealership from a woman in Texas who had a bunch of kids. As you might guess by the 5 previous owners, the service record for the car is not very comprehensive. The dealership did do their "120-point inspection", and we've been looking into some of the common potential issues, but we don't know whether the turbos have been replaced, or whether it's been given the right oil, etc. I'm hoping that with my tiny hands and long arms, I might be able to get down below the turbos and check for leaks, but I'm not sure. We've gotten in touch with a good independent shop that specializes on the V10, so we've been asking them some questions too.

Some of the things they're doing for the car before we purchase it are putting new tires on, checking the 4-wheel alignment, and replacing some broken hood struts. We're also getting an additional progammed key.

Anyone think this is a fair deal? I'm including some photos of the car, if that helps. We understand that this car is a "pay to play" kind of deal, but we don't want to pay an unfair amount, if experienced minds think we can do better. We can also get photos of anything else, if there's some key points that you'd like to see.

I think that's a little high. Do you have maintenance records?

I can see the xx,xxx mile services in the carfax, nothing whatsoever beyond that. Just the dealer servicing every 10k or so. I'm digging around now. What would I be looking for? Turbo replacement?

Well, just maintenance in general. What's been replaced, have the airbags been serviced? Timing belt or chain, etc.

You have to ask yourself, that's a great car, why would someone get rid of it?

The BS reason we got was that she had like four million kids and needed a car that could hold all of her eggs for her mate to fertilize or whatever, I try not to pay attention to the salesperson's stories. I'm looking closely at the carfax and it's got very regular maintenance, but doesn't say what. It does mention the dealers that did the work. Do you think it's worth trying to call them? Will they even have or give us those records?

Assuming we're going without those records, what sort of price do you think we ought to be paying? And thank you for your reply!

And should we post the carfax and see if more educated minds can spot anything uncouth?

You can try the dealership. When I got mine, I called them, and was told that they couldn't disclose any info due to previous client confidentiality. Which is also a load of crap.

Remember, the carfax is only as good as what is reported.

I'll try them in the morning, I'll ask them about the turbos. The indie shop we're hooked up with can do both pumps without dropping the engine, using a powerful mechanical technique described as "cursing". Hence, I'm concerned largely about the turbos and maybe also the transmission. It's Berg Automotive in Denver, for the record.

Can someone school us on the DPF filters? Do we need to replace these, as they're due at 120k, and the car's at 129k?

There's no timing chain or belt on a V10, it's all toothed gear driven which is why there are rubber connectors and clutches on the generator and aircon compressor.

I would check what the warranty covers and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, any limits on repair costs as that supercharged engine can soon run away with $$$$$!
