Getting My Hands On A Tiguan

VW is holding a big press event in Boulder, CO next week for the Tiguan. After this event, VWoA is going to hand over a Tiggy to me for an extended road test/review.

I will be taking the thing to New Mexico and will really get a good sense of what some have called the "Baby Touareg" is all about.

Pictures and a review coming soon.

Very cool. I looked at one at my dealer this morning (just from the outside, was picking up a couple things), and I think in person it seems nicer than it looks in the pics, at least to my eyes. But, nearly $30k (SE 4Motion) is a little tough for me to stomach for what is essentially a small AWD station wagon. Especially when a CR-V (ugly as it is) or Escape are about the same size and a good bit cheaper. Granted, the Tig is a much nicer vehicle than many (any?) of the other mini-utes, but I think it's going to end up priced a bit out of its target market. I'm sure the US dollar in the toilet has a good bit to do with it.

Also, it's too bad that there's no TDI out of the gate, as this would be a very unique addition to the mini-ute class in the US. It may have been enough to make the Tig stand out from the rest of the herd, and draw customers. If it had TDI (and the accompanying 30s/40s highway MPG) and a stick for $25k, they couldn't keep them on the lots! As it is though, I personally think it's a nice vehicle that will struggle against cheaper competition. Good luck to VW with it though!

I think my main question is will it perform if it comes off the pavement? From what I have read, this "Mini-egg" has all the style and accoutrimons of the egg, but none of the muscle or suspension/offroad performance. I'm looking forward to seeing one when they land at my local VW in RTP, as well as seeing the review from this thread!

In the next 1-2 yrs I will need to retire my 04 I think. Definately will be a VW TDI, question is sticking with egg or giving the tig a chance...

The Tig is not intended to be the beast the Treg is. It will be good for light offroad. If RJ gets one for the rally this year we can let you know if we had to pull it through anywhere. There is no low range in it so that should be a good indication there that it is not meant for serious offroad such as the Treg is.

The Tiguan comes in an off-road version with a sharper approach angle, but that version is not available in the US. That version comes with skidplates and some tricky off-road-tuned electronics to act as a quasi-low range, but without a low-range transfer case.

Hey TREGinginCO, any chance you'll have that puppy for a few months? I hear Imogene (or at least Ophir) calling...

Tiguan nothing to write home about, me thinks ever so humbly

Funny, I also went by the dealer today and he had a base Tiguan model to show on the lot... I was not impressed for the money, especially when 4motion added on and SEL trim level take it to $33000 ! I can buy a new T for $32999 hereabouts with the owner loyalty rebate added in.... why compromise a fine machine down to a cross between a Passat rear and a Jetta front end, according to the old time salesman here. It was small and the listed gas mileage didn't make it up for me, 18 city, 24 highway, I think it was... in fact, the CR-V seemed a lot more vehicle when my sister-in-law was by with her 2007, and I have no reason to own a Honda! And Matt is right that this is not considered off-road capable as presented in the US.

The best thing about the Touareg are its capabilities right off the lot, why this then when its as expensive? I am afraid for VWOA...why offer two five passenger vehicles that seem to redux each other?

Deep down I'm hoping that it is just a little brother to the Treg, but I'm thinking that it might fall short by a bunch.

My dealer had four on the lot when I went in to pick up my egg (new battery). I sat in one, which I always do, to see if it passed the first test (I'm 6'3" 250 lbs). The seat moved back plenty and it really felt good just sitting there in it.

I drove a friends Jetta yesterday (1.8 turbo/six speed). What a hoot. I also fit well in that car. I'm going to be forced to consider the Tiguan for the wife's daily driver if it performs anywhere close to what that little Jetta felt like!
