T1 - Distinguish between CD & DVD Nav head units?

I'm wondering if there is sure-fire visual way to tell between the CD based and DVD based Nav head units installed in T1s in North America?

It seems that the middle button on CD units is "TELE". On the DVD units it is either "MUTE" (7L6 035 177D) or "AUX" (7L6 035 177E).

Can anybody confirm or deny this?

Any firm idea when the changeover from CD to DVD happened?

We have a few threads talking about this, but here's Allen Wang description of the units:

Ok thanks. That photo on Allen's site is quite helpful!

Also, I did find an answer to my own question regarding the switchover from CD to DVD based.

It happened roughly Feb/Mar 2005 (build date). The VIN split is CD based Nav to VIN 7L5060000. DVD based Nav from VIN 7L5060001.

Change from CD-NAVI to DVD-NAVI unit, there maybe no audio at all.
Because the audio wires are different.

Allen,

I was just trying to confirm when the VW production change from CD based navigation to DVD based navigation occurred (see date and VIN split info above).

I have a late 2005 model (build date 05/05) with an aftermarket stereo, but want to sort out which unit my car came with stock (and hence, which amp is installed in the back).

Evidence seems to point to an analog amp.

ETKA can help you to check the parts via VIN.

Hi Allen, I have a question for you if I may.

I hope you don't mind me reposting your photo of the VW radios. I have the stock radio in the photo in my car (top left). What would you recommend to me as an upgrade, that would be a direct replacement and work with all the speakers too?

I understand that this unit has an internal amplifier, so that may be an issue to consider too as if I remove it I will have no amplification to the speakers.

Thanks.

I recommend this unit: Volkswagen Touareg Android 6.0 OS GPS Navigation Head Unit
This radio works on your car no matter your car has non-amp or analog amplifier. All speakers will still work as before.

So Allen
You are saying no matter which amp digital, analogue or none at all this unit will still operate all 11 speakers??

Do I still get all the MFD info and full steering wheel control with Canbus 1.6??

Another question is: How do I know which version of Canbus I've got in my car?
