Nope, original cd's are stamped, not burned. They are quite different than burned cd's.

Check here for more info.

Also, to answer DMM's question from above, the Touareg historically cannot read MP3/WMA files on a CD, as it can't decode them. I believe this capability is available in the newer stereos like the RNS 510, but I know it's not there in any T1, nor the '08 T2's in the US. I'm not sure what the '08 stereos are like in Oz, but it seems like everywhere else gets the cool stuff before we do.

I can confirm that it plays Verbatim CDRs...

I have one stuck in there right now. I guess I should have removed it before cutting power to it for my iPod adapter. Now I can't get it out!

Summary:
CD's manufactured are stamped, highest reflectivity.
CD-R's burned are less reflective but meet RedBook standards for all player's lasers after ~1992.
CD+/-RW's are 1/2 the reflectivity of CD-Rs and most early players could have trouble reading them until after ~1998 when most players met the specifications.

ALL T's should be able to read CD-R's and even CD+/-RW's

MP3's cannot be read in-dash or in the 6 changer until the latest vehicles (dumb asses).
MP3's can be burned to CD-Audio format (the ones that are stamped) so that they can play in older cars. Of course that limits you to the typical 12-18 songs or ~60 minutes.

I am using Office Depot Brand CD-R media and burning at 40x with Nero, the CD player in my '04 plays them fine at with no problems and the quality is great. Like Matt said though make sure you are specifying on nero that it is going to be played in a home or car CD player.

Sony everything sucks dog balls!!! I used to be a Sony Rep and know what really goes into the products, the quality of material that is used on Sony products is sub par, and Sony also pays people like Consumer Reports to give them good reviews, eg. Sony 46 and 50 inch XBR 4 and 5 LCD televisions 3 out of 5 panels go bad, dead pixels, Sony will not warranty because the area of the defect is not big enough and does not qualify to be covered under warranty. I won't even get started on Sony notebook computers. Sorry about the rant I just hate to see people get ripped off by Sony.
