Bit more info on the canbus adapter:
The canbus adapter merely translates canbus 1.6 to/from 2.0 messages for the RNS only - i.e it does not do anything to the overall canbus as it acts as a filter between them.

Singh,
no I didn't source locally. My supplier no longer has any - VW tighened up the supply I believe.
vwnavi has a supplier who by all ccounts is very reliable - check here:
RNS 510 brand new - VWnavi.com - Your Source for Satellite Navigation Systems in VAG Automobiles
And his prices are very good. Believe he gives a warranty and ships carefully.
You want the Euro version. 7L6......A. The Touran also fits, but I'd stay with a Touareg version. vwnavi has the part numbers in an FAQ.
Glad to help in getting you going.

I too have been considering getting the RNS 510. I just got an 08 black V8 Touareg with Tech package. I find the navi not as good on other similar vehicle and want to upgrade.

I'm under the impression that the 08 models are on Can bus 2.0 already and so the RNS 510 will simply bolt in. However do I need to do any coding to the unit? Will the Back-up cam and and steering wheel functions still work?

Is this something the VW dealers will do for you?

thanks

Does the unit work in the older Tregs and still enable the steering wheel controls?

yes, for older tregs you need a canbus adapter, small module which takes care of the difference between the newer canbus 2 and the old one

Well if you switch over to the RNS 510, if you find it cheap, pick it up. Over here I was quoted the thing as an option the RNS 510 was quoted at USD 3750 and thr backup camera quoted at 850 USD. CEO of VW Indonesia talked me out of it since over here the format for the nav would not work here so he talked me in to a all in one unit made by a VW OEM supplier with Nav unit, Bluetooth, review camera, IPOD connector plus able to connect and hook up to the steering wheel controls, all for roughly 1000 to 1500 USD installed. I'll know in mid November if this solution works.
