These new Nav units rock. I test drove an R36 the other day with one of these units installed, wanted to buy he car for the unit. I'd like to retro fit to the V10, issue is will TV work and all the other stuff function as standard.

Hi Bails,
Thanks to you the phatbox works fantastically well in my v10. hasnt missed a beat so far.
as for the rns510 it will be great if someone can let us use theirs for 10 mins ie. pull out and connect to our vehicle to see how mfi behaves and if the steering buttons work

Hi,
I have fitted an RNS510 in place of my MFD2 in my 2005 V10. Added the Conexx 1.6 to 2.0 adapter as the Kufatec filters the speed signal - which I found made the nav inaccurate.
Getting a firmware upgrade of the adapter for the MFD in the instrument cluster to work. The steering controls for volume work.
The original TV tuner does not work with the RNS510, so if you want TV, it will need to change.
Also, I had fitted the OEM reverse camera for my MFD2 and needed to change the controller. Still working on getting it working with the RNS510.....
However, the RNS510 is great and is much nicer than the MFD2....
Having said that, I now have an MFD2 (DVD version) and a reverse camera controller to match if anyone is interested....

This is one of the upgrades I'd really like to make. The TV tuner would be good also, this is in the back compartment, issue could be that the cabling is all different, which would mean a very hard install.People seem to be finding the units OK on e bay and such, I asked my local parts supplier, at the dealer, could he get one, response was not at an affordable price.

So if this back fitting can be solved then I'm up for one as soon as I can find out how to get one at the right price.

Hi BH,
Are you using the kufatec adapter to upgrade your canbus to 2.0? is the firmware upgrade related to this adapter? So the only two parts required are the RNS510 & the kufatec adapter?
I guess replacing the MFI with the new one would mean new cluster altogether and bit too expensive.
any idea if the reverse camera controller will work with the rns2 cd version?

Hi Singh,
The problem is the canbus - not the MFI. And the canbus is built into the instrument cluster. Changing the canbus to 2.0 will mean all the other can1.6 devices won't work - might as well buy a new car with canbus 2.0 as you will have to change every controller in the car - and at VW parts prices that is probably about $20-30k!!
The firmware upgrade to the 1.6 to 2.0 adapter has everything working in the MFI except the nav arrows. Fo me no big deal as I tended not to use this anyway. More important to me is the radio/ music readout.

So to get it to work you only need the RNS510 and the canbus adapter - all plug and play - bit of a challenge to push all the wiring back though - I had to feed some guidewires down thru the storage compartment above to pull the harnesses out of the way why I slid the RNS in. Then put the compartment back.

You will absolutely love the RNS. I have an A4 with the RNS-E in it and this nav is about as good - you get to choose 3 alternate paths rather than the one that the MFD2 chooses. Plus it is a touch screen.
I also have a legit VW nav disk - started by modding a BMW nav disk which uses the same processor in the nav, but now have the real thing. These can be modded to add in your own POI such as speed cameras etc, although you get no warning as per the mobile nav devices. But nice to see them there on the screen when planning a trip.
So the nav maps are loaded to the hard disk, then you can copy music either via DVD or SD card to the hard disk - will hold about 2500 tracks. Lovely!!!
One word of warning though - make sure if you buy an RNS it is loaded with the latest firmware (1022) as I and a number of others discovered the hard way that there can be faulty motherboards that when you do a firmware upgrade the thing locks up - had to go back to my supplier to get fixed - took 3 months!!!!
You will also need to get access to a canbus 2.0 car (Golf etc) to code the RNS with vag - unless you get your supplier to code it. Mostly this is about making the fader work - which by default does not work - i.e it is not a control on the screen.
Happy to assist in any way.

Re the TV tuner and the reverse camera controller I have....

These will both work with the MFD2. MFD2 comes in two forms - CD and DVD. Otherwise identical. The DVD has the smarts to turn on the reverse camera when reversing. The CD requires this to be a manual selection. My MFD2 is the DVD version. DVD maps are available from Holden (for a lower price than VW!!) as in the statesman they use the same Blaupunkt units. I have a map that is about a year old.

Kufatec sell the cable to connect up to the MFD2 which runs to the back panel. About Euro 70. Then it is simply a plug and play after finding a canbus connection. The reverse camera itself can be bought locally, along with a new rear gate handle in which it fits. It needs a small coax cable and power run between the controller and camera. I have all the pinout details. Very very neat and very very useful - no fear of running over kids/ bikes etc and a dream to reverse up to a trailer/ caravan (and in my case horse float).

Hope this helps.
