Double check the overall diameter.

31.5 inches is the maximum OD I would go to.

Your suspension travel will not be limited by this.

As already suggested, consider more recent tread developments.

Sounds like a 265/70/17 Hankook Dynapro AT / Goodyear Duratrac would work fine?

Could not find the Hankooks in any size that would fit, do they make them?

Also all the 265/70/17 seem to have an OD of 31.7?

They might fit. How about finding a friendly tire fitter and doing a trial fit? It might cost you a few beer tokens if the tires need to come back off....

They definately make the dynapro in 265/70/17 and 265/65/17.

I would go for a 265/65/17 to be safe.

I would recommend 255/65/18 if you have the stock 18" rim. A little narrower for more intercooler clearance, and still a 31" tire. The only tire in this size is the Goodyear Adventure with Kevlar, which I hear great things about.

This will be my tire/size of choice when I finally pull the trigger on a T3 Touareg.

I also really like the Michelin LTX M/S2 for mild offroading, or the LTX A/T2 for medium offroading.

Xplore thanks for the info. I just purchased 17" Canyon Wheels so I am looking to get the most tire for off road use. If I can fit a 265/70/17 that would be my preference. When looking at the specs however it seems most the tires im looking at are around 31.6-31.7 OD so im just curious if those will fit without rubbing. I saw Ssato was running a 31.6 tire so im wondering if the 31.7 will fit ok or if its really maxxed out. I cant find anyone that will test fit.

The 265/70 is 31.7 and the 265/65 is 30.6 which is a large difference. So im just trying to get some confirmation that it will fit.

2 Members run 265/70/17's with no issues, which is a good sign, but all vehicles are different. A test fit is your best bet for sure, but I think 265/70/17's are safe.

31.6/31.7 is the same thing,

And as for the 265/70 vs 265/65, you are only gaining a 1/2 inch more clearance, which isn't the end of the world.

stock tires are ~ 29". A 265/65 is ~31" so only 1 extra inch of ground clearance, pushing the touareg from 8" -> 9".

A 265/70/17 will go up to 9.5" of clearance.

You also need to factor in the loss of MPG you will see for a bigger heavier tire, your speedo will be off a little, and you will be down a bit on power. Power shouldn't be an issue on the TDI people, but if you are a V6 gas owner it will be a BIG loss in power.
