A 31" diameter tire on an 17/18" wheel has the same amount of sidewall no matter what the width. Most people go with wider tires for more floatation. Narrow tires would tend to sink more in softer terrain.

The 2nd number in the tire size is not a measured number but a ratio of width to sidewall height. So a narrow tire would need a higher number to equal a wider tire of the same overall diameter.

These are nominal numbers....
235 = 235mm wide
75 = 0.75 x 235 = 176.25mm tall sidewall (nominal)
17 = 17" wheel

So 17" => 431.8mm + 176.25 + 176.25 = 784.3mm => 30.88" Diameter

265 = 265mm wide
65 = 0.65 x 265 = 172.25mm

so.... 17" => 431.8mm + 172.25 + 175.25 = 776.3mm => 30.56" Diameter

It's either gotta be really really clean....or really really dirty.

I can understand the idea of "flotation" but not sure it makes as big a difference as some think. Dakar cars use 235/85r16 tires and they see tons of sand. It just seems that some of the fitment issues could be avoided by sticking with OE widths and going to a higher aspect ratio tire for height. Also tire weight seems to go up much faster when increasing width than when increasing height.

For instance the Cooper AT3 in 235/75r17 weighs 35lbs and in 265/65r17 weighs 40lbs. That 5lbs a tire is a lot, especially if you consider the 1lb rotation weight = ~10lbs in the car. For the Coopers that's like adding 200lbs into the back.

Just trying to get people thinking about sizes other than the 265/65 that is so prevalent.

No rubbing whatsoever, even with air set to low in sport mode. The only negative being the substantial decline of MPG.

KO2 265/65/17

Hi all

I've just got my hands on a UK spec 2005 2.5tdi manual with steel suspension and canyon 17 inch rims. I'm loving it so far but the tires are cheap road tires which are pretty shot and I want to get it out in the mud so I'm going to swap the whole lot for a set as big a set as I can, Ideally BFG KO2's in 265/65/17 like yours tzwizard. From reading this and multiple other tyre threads I've established that 265/70/17 won't fit because of the IC vents and mine is an earlier model so im not sure if the IC vents are in the same position as tzwizards being a 2010 or if the wheel wells are the even the same dimensions? Ultimately has anyone fitted this size BF Goodrich KO2 or any other aggressive tyre in the larger sizes to a t1 tdi on 17's?

Thanks!

Before you do anything at all, do you know if your engine has EXACTLY the right oil in it to avoid premature camshaft lobe wear? Even VW dealers get it wrong.

VW 505.01 or 506.01 - nothing else will do.

Thanks for the heads up! It seems there is a whole load of potential expensive problems to bare in mind.. passed on the car, it was cheap but had no history..
