So hats off to bagpipingandy!! Rebuild was super simple! Removal and install super easy. I found this super helpful..
Removal and installation of the compressor unit without solenoid valve. Volkswagen Touareg (from 2003 to 2006, the year of issue)
Only I highly recommend loosening the compressor mount assembly before trying to remove any clips or airlines.
Now my new treg raises and lowers with ease..No more fault codes and the compressor is nearly silent as opposed to before. Also after being in that area if you do not have road gaurds on that side I highly recommend them as to keep everything clean and dry ...Lots of connection and couplings you want to keep safe from the elements

Or even...

Removal and installation of the compressor unit without solenoid valve. Volkswagen Touareg (from 2003 to 2006, the year of issue)

though, in fairness, the link in post #12 does work!

If you've got the compressor on your workbench, do the dryer too...

The air drier is supposed to self rejuvenate. Dries incoming air. Releases the moisture to the air as it discharges. No need to replace the desiccant AFAIK.

Even if the dessicant self rejuvenates, I'd like to swap out the two filter pieces for clean ones. As long as I've got the unit on the bench...
