A fellow at work had the A/S on his Benz E class fail. Similar scenario to yours although the E class doesn't have the wheel travel of the Touareg, so it seems that it was less dramatic. Also know someone whose A/S had a complete failure on their Range Rover...they were up north on a snowmobile trip, they drove it back home on the bumps stops...

Rocherstergeek I think you're doing the right thing...I hear you on the smokes (good thing I quit a number of years ago, but I get where you're coming from). Seems that all the failures on here are between Buffalo-Montreal, all similar weather conditions (though Montreal does have an addiction to extreme and excessive salt usage). I'm going to start eyeballing the Phaeton forums to see if they are experiencing failures as well....I did read something on the Phaeton board where VW has updated the A/S units, so if you have an '04 Phaeton and one strut needs replacement, you need to replace all 4 at a cost of $10 grand!!!!

The connectors on my '10 look like the replacement connectors VWdude got put on his. So there was a running correction made on the A/S, but is it a much better connection then what you guys have now? Only time will tell I guess. UT uses salt on the roads here given we have a natural source to get it from, the Salt Flats. I will keep an eye on mine as the years go by on it to see if it effects the newer connections.

There were other posts about sensor issues...and when my MFI barked, that's what I presumed it to be. When my dealer said I had a subtle air leak - and that the entire canister needed to be replaced (vs. your repair) - I began looking for more info and still could not find much.

Definitely a weird outbreak affecting at least three of us.
I thought the exact same thing! Well almost. I was thinking "why do these things always have to happen to me first" . Even my cousin overseas laughed at me when I mentioned it in our conversation on Skype a couple of days ago. He remembered my asking 6 months ago if I should buy a Touareg with air suspension or not, and he said yesterday to me, well look what happened, of all things to happen.

Nick, would it be possible for you to go look at your 04 V10, and tell me what colour the connectors are on that one?

Here are a couple of pics of what my drivers side front connection looks like. Keep in mind my V10 spent the first 4 years of its life in Miami, so it hasn't been exposed to road salt (mind you it was exposed to salt in the air from the ocean).

It just occurred to me Nick, I should have asked you this in my other thread, since that is where I posted the pics of mine, but I guess it's ok. I mixed the two threads up reading back and forth.

Now what I don't understand is why they look brass coloured on your 04, when the dealer said mine were a "white metal," superseded with the brass coloured ones. I don't get, but I was suspicious of this, hence my asking. Unless I'm missing something here, could it be that the brass coating on my old ones were completely oxidized from the salt, rendering them whitish???

I didn't because I didn't have one at the time.
I do now though, and literally memorized

Nick just posted his pictures of the ones on his 04 V10, in post# 12 in this thread here http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f6...h-33585-2.html .

I am now slightly stumped, but not at all surprised, with the horses mouth having to be the dealer. Now what I don't understand is why they look brass coloured on his 04, when the dealer said mine were a "white metal," superseded with the brass coloured ones. I don't get it, but I was suspicious of this, hence my asking Nick, and others here to please post pics of theirs, or at least a description. Unless I'm missing something here, could it be that the brass on my old ones was completely oxidized from the salt, rendering them whitish, and making the dealer jump to the conclusion that they were redesigned??? Does anybody follow my concern here?

I know we're between two threads here, but I'll just continue this discussion here in the hope of helping out Rochester with his situation...

It looks to me that its not the brass part that corroded on yours, rather it looks like the nipple these brass parts attach to corroded? If you blow up my pics and look real close you can see that the brass part attached to a silver metal...its especially noticeable in the first pic I posted. I would suspect that if you took some metal polish to your brass parts, they would shine right up.

Rochester, can you verify if this is the same area that failed on yours?

The brass looking connections are what the tsb changes them to. I had them pull up the TSB and it does indeed change the actual material compound to something that is not going to corrode (again I shake my head in disbelief of the idiots that designed the suspension to corrode), and if you do what your dealer wants, that its more money and labor, you get exactly what you own now. A suspension that is going to fail in a few years. The only way to correct this issue is to perform the tsb and actually fix the issue. I just filed a complaint at the nhtsa website with the office of defects investigation.

Perhaps the TSB was performed on my V10...my VIN number is 44953 so its one of the earlier models.

Nick, I believe that they are actually a material change. I however dont know for sure because I am not sure I want to be responsible for anything that breaks in the process of this VW TSB and seeing how I am assuming liability for anything that goes wrong, what do I need a mechanic for?
