275/45/R20 Tire on a 20" Wheel

I have a 2006 V8 Touareg that needs a set of 20" wheels. i think that the 275/45/R20 tire looks the best and probably has the smoothest ride. I saw somewhere where VW recommends a 275/40/R20. Does anyone know if VW will give me any warranty flack if I go with the 45 series?

Sincerely,
Monk

275/45/20 is the way to go. Slightly taller tire, better ride, and tires in that size a quite a bit cheaper than the 275/40/20. No problems with warranty. If the dealer even begins to say anything about it, swiftly kick them in the junk.

Today i purchased a set of Audi Q7 S-Line 20" wheels (the ones that come on 2009 Q7's) with a set of new 275/45r20's mounted on them (this the the stock size for the Q7.)... so hopefully they work. Sounds like a lot of guys have used 275/45r20's without and issues. Curious how you like the 40 series... if might switch to 275/40's on my next set of tires.

I just installed my newly bought 275-40-20 today. It marks the very first time in my life I'm trying this size on a Touareg. Quite a big difference over the stock 18's! More so than I had expected in all given aspects of the driving experience. I'll need some more time with them, but first impressions were that comfort mode on the air suspension felt like what sport mode did on the 18's, as far as ride compliancy over bumps. Handling and steering responsiveness on the 275-40-20's is a HUGE difference however! Very safe on the highway indeed, should a severe emergency maneuver ever manifest itself. The latter is what may keep me a 40 series fan for good. What might push me away from the 40's, and want to try the 45's next time, will be the slight increase road noise transmitted through the cabin, and harsher ride over our Montreal regions pot holes. How well this all adds up over time and weighed on the scale will be key. It's all user end preference at the end of the day.

I forgot to do this, but it would be cool for someone to record the dB level using a dB measuring apparatus (think iPhone APPS), with the 18's and 20's. Shame I completely forgot
Maybe next fall.

I've been running 275/45/20s for a couple years now..works fantastic, I love them. Most guys running 20's on the board are doing it with 45s not 40s. Technically 40 is the correct size, but if you want to maintain some SUV usability, that extra bit of sidewall offered by the 45s is priceless!
