So I just got my 2010 T2 VW Touareg and took it on its maiden voyage to Western Massachusetts which is about 2 hrs away from where I live in the Boston area. While on the highway, the car began to shake at high speed, so I pulled over the check the tires out. One tire had a huge blister on the sidewall that looked like an egg. I immediately drove to a tire repair shop which was 4 minutes away and they broke the bad news to me about the 19" wheel being hard to find tires for. I put on the inflatable spare which I am hoping will get me home (100 miles) keeping to 50 mph which is the stated speed limit for this spare.

So the tires I have now are 275 45 R19 Achilles Desert Hawk UHD and have about 40% tread left, so I should probably replace them anyways.

The question now is, what do I get? I drive in all weather conditions and prefer safety and grip in all weather over performance. I also hope to keep my spend as close to $200 per tire as possible.

What are your recommendations?

Thanks!

Do NOT, repeat, DO NOT exceed the 50 mph limit.

The electronics will cope with the diameter variation up to that speed but not above it.

Yes, with that wear, you MUST fit 4 new tires at the same time to avoid damaging the clutches in the gearbox.

Yes, there are many tire threads with nearly as many recommendations as there are posts!

When you let the air out of the spare by removing the valve core [be sure you catch it!], make sure it is on a hard surface, not grass or gravel, keep you hands and fingers well out of the way, and do invite the village/town idiot along to watch - they will enjoy it!

Sure... and I have. However none that match my driving conditions. Coming to a forum of experts for my specific questions is what this place is for, no?

I guess I am having a better day than you, even despite my tire situation...

I think I may just get 4 new Achilles Desert Hawk UHD 275 45 19 for $450 and have the local tire place install them...

Search the tire forums as lots have been said there, but for quick reference you can look at 265/50r19 or 255/55r19 both of with fit fine on terra wheels and usually cost a little less than the 275/45r19. Just make sure they are XL load rated.
For all weather use look at the nokian, for an all season that does well I like the nitto nt421q.
Also since the spare has been used, have it check to see if it needs replacing.

This is also very helpful. I will look into those tire sizes as well. And I'll replace the spare.

Will I even make it home on my spare? It's like 110 miles... I'll have to go like 45mph with my hazards on the whole way which I am fine with, but I just don't want to have a flat and have to get towed and/or mess up my car from driving with the spare too long, even if it doesn't flat.

There is a VW dealer here who can get tires if I stay an extra day.

The spare will be fine.

Just set the cruise control to 50 mph.

There should be no need whatsoever to replace the tire either.

The only reason you might consider replacement is, as you should with any tire, if the tire itself is more than 6 years old.

FWIW, like my Toyo Proxes ST II (275 45 r20), they're nice all around tires. Good grip with good ride at the expense of some lost feedback compared with some other tires. Excellent wet traction. Decent traction on mud and gravel roads (you wont mistake them for an A/T tire). I can't comment on snow traction as I run a set of winters for winter weather, however I would expect them to be about as good as your average all season tire.

My size was $275 CAD each so I dont know what 19s would run you.
