Thanks for the info FixMyBug. It's actually been raining here for a bit today (I'm loving it!!) so I didn't want to delve into this and risk getting something wet.

Osram is listing the 66142 bulb as a 4100k bulb in their literature. This is indeed slightly more yellow than the 4300k that seems to have been the norm for the Touareg.

Check here for a PDF of Osram Automotive lighting for more info. Our bulbs are on page 9.17.

Illumination
Whiter and crisper blue-white
light is safer because it is
closer to natural daylight
compared to light from
halogen sources. Color
temperature is ~4200o K
compared to ~3200oK for
halogen.

So, what you are saying is that the HID lights are in the ~4200ok temp.

I thought they were higher temp.

Stock HID is generally between 4100-4300k. I think some brands may use hotter (over 4300k) color temps, but I doubt they'd go over 6000k if they even go that high, due to the diminishing light. HID headlamps are available hotter than that, but they generally are the "boutique" things that people that want more blue light put in their vehicles. Functionally, they get dimmer the bluer the get, so the higher the color temp the bluer the bulbs appear.

I've seen HID headlight bulbs as high as 10000k, which are really blue.

Everything I've read and been told... the max light output and best white color for xenons is at around 6000...anything above that goes purple and you lose output.

I dunno

Mine did exactly this too, the headlight assembly connectors aren't very well designed, just take the assebly out, clear the dust off the connectors with compressed air and bend the pin a little and it will be fine again.

FYI the left sidelight pin is the top left corner pin of the connector on the car looking from the front.

Cheers
