Wheel Bearings

Ok so I made a mistake and discovered something from that mistake.
Replaced a front wheel bearing for a friend the other day on his Toyota.
Removed it and had to cut the old bearing off the hub and proceeded to fit the new bearing. All went together just right, fitted new seals and when I was ready to fit the hub back to the vehicle I noticed a few small metal particles on the ABS sensor ring on the bearing. Ah I thought I will just get my magnetic pickup tool and get it off with, which I did and it worked fine. Fitted all back together and jumped in to test drive down the road. As soon as I pressed on the brakes there was a noticeable shudder so I released the brake did it again and the shudder came back so released them again pressed again only no shudder this time brakes worked perfect but all of a sudden there was the ABS light on in the dash.
Took it home and racked my brain what was wrong it all went together just right. Ok pulled the wheel off and checked all good?. Then it occurred to me so I went and did some research on the bearings. Turns out I had changed the bearing sensor ring fields with my pickup tool so the sensor itself could not sense the bearing. Wow what a simple thing to do that seemed just the convenient thing to do with the pickup tool. So back to step one re-changed the new bearing with another new bearing (lucky only $100) drove the car 100m and light went off problem fixed and lesson learnt.
Just hope this saves any one doing this and not realizing the issue or did everyone but me know this could happen?

Thanks for sharing Drag, always good to know even if it is above my ability to do that sort of thing.

While I'm at it Drag, took my car in to European Car Centre im Maryville (Ncstle) to do an oil change and precautionary check at the start of our Eildee run and they found an oil leak from the front harmonic balancer and also from the rear turbo seals.
Really pissed off with this as I had it dealer serviced 10K before whilst it was still in warranty and they must have been blind to have missed it.
Now out of extended warranty and I see a fight on my hands with dealer/warranty and VW.
European Car centre recommend replacing the turbo completely (souced ex USA to save costs) as if only the seals are done there's a chance that the variable vanes can cause a problem (or something to that effect).
Any thoughts?

Hey Tony
Would have loved to make the Muster and meet you guys but life and stuff made it impossible.
Hope someone organizes another one sometime soon so I can try and make that.
Harmonic balancer oil leak well those things happen and not end of world to repair but very disappointing that your dealer didn't pick it up. Maybe worth a phone call now to complain to your dealer and get your date locked in to help with possible arguments later?
As for the Turbo leak not sure exactly what you mean, is it leaking internally past the centre bearing seals and you are getting oil in your intake/intercooler hoses? I struggle to see how a turbo leaks oil externally unless the oil feed pipe is leaking and if this is the case it should be able to be resealed? If all this proves to be true and I am wrong (my wife tells me I am wrong all the time) I have just had my Turbo's rebuilt by ProCharge in Victoria for $550ea which is a big saving on ex USA of $1500ea for new units. While I have not run them yet and that will be a while, ProCharge owner Ben was very helpful and willing to talk thru issues, questions and they look great and have a clear improvement with the amount of play in the compressor wheel main shaft. If you have any questions give Ben a call on 03 8015 6103 tell him I said to call and I am sure he can answer most of your questions.

Hope none of these prevent you from having a good time on your trip

HI Drag, missed your posts earlier. Useful bit of info. I didn't realise the ABS worked off the bearings, assumed there was a separate trigger near the hub. As they say, when you stop learning you may as well be dead. Regarding Tony's oil leak, is it not possible it is the Tandem pump as you picked with Dubby's V10 or just the fuel pump if it is the LH side? We don't really know how well the mechanics searched for the exact source now do we? John

Lot of questions to considered. The V6 does not have exactly a tandem pump but does have a engine driven vacuum pump which is either mounted on the LH side rear cyl head or the RH front by the limited drawings i have.
All the fuel movements are taken car of by electric pumps bar the HPFP.
But probably as far as he is concerned i don't think he has an issue.
There you are John we have fixed his problem and we didn't even need to talk to him lol
