What Brand Oil?

I would guess that everyone probably has thier favorite brand of engine oil but I am wondering if there are any experiences or factual reasons why one brand is better (or not) than another. I currently have a independent service shop putting in Elf. Cost is about $100.

I checked with the local dealer and they will charge about $100 and use Castrol. They will also do the other checks such a fluids and rotate tires - something the independent did not do last time.

The only other difference is the dealer is much closer (5 mi versus 30mi). The Treg has 80K on the clock and oil checks show a remarkably clean oil.

you think thats bad, has the timing belt been done? Since you are at 80K.

I use Motul Xcess 8100. 8.50 per quart x 7, and 10 bucks for an OEM filter. Costs me just under 70 bucks to do it myself.

I'm prepared for that one (sort of) Dealer and independent both say not to hurry as the timing belt service can safely be delayed to about 90K. Both give me about the same estimate ........... $1,500. Includes all the stuff that should be done when it is apart, water pump and so forth.

Thanks Spokcat for the hint. I presumed that both would meet the specs for VW. I was also looking for other users' experiences as I would possibly be switching brands.

I think TOTAL is best.full synthetic is available for EURO4 standart.cost is about 80$

I use amsoil basically because I think it is the best oil available

Mobil 1 0w40 myself. Nice and light at startup so it circulates through the motor faster and still thick enough at operating temp. Personal preference though.

I use the Mobil 1 0W40 as well. Engine is remarkably strong after 6 years of this and no real oil loss between changes. 37K miles and the same set of plugs and coils since new. It is a remarkably tight engine compared to others I have owned. I do go 7-10K between changes, too. $6.50 per quart at AutoZone, not my favorite store though...
