Towing Package
I am thinking about having the tow hitch installed on my Touareg. Has anyone had this done by the dealer? Has anyone installed it themselves?
I'm looking for a little guidance on what worked for everyone else. Thanks

Hitch installation experience
I had the hitch installed by the dealer. Casey VW in Newport News, VA. They did an adequate job. no cosmetic defects noted. The electrical hookup was messed up. I took it back and they fixed it the next day. I control box had malfunctioned. Right after that, I towed 1500 lbs (in a UHAUL Trailer) ~ 1000 miles, no problems.
Price: Hitch: ~ $700 Installation: ~$500 Good luck

I had a VW dealer install the hitch and it an adequate hitch, but it leaves a gap underneath your bumper. Go to the following post and you can see what i am talking about.

Did it myself
I ordered the Curt Hitch from hitchesonline and did it myself. Not bad at all... maybe 2-3 hours. Also did the wiring by myself. Do a search for curt hitch and you'll get the info you need.

I have seen installs of both the VW and curt hitches on the web. What do you want to tow?

Insalling tow hitch
I had my dealer do it using the VW factory part. Don't be surprised at the high labor charge; they have to remove and then reinstall the rear bumper to install the hitch.

Hitch - Off Road Trailer
I want to adapt my towbar to use it with my off-road trailer. The trailer hight is 11cm higher. Please advise, it looks like my only option is to cut the 'ball' off and put a plate on to extend it upwards.
