Replacing struts

I have about 70k on my v8 treg with non air suspension. Im guessing that my struts probably need to be replaced, has anyone done this and hows the installation? Also is there a way to tell ride wise when the struts are worn.

Thanks cal

Can't be any more different than any other vehicle with a steel spring shock combo. When the vehicle yo yo's up down down after when first pushed down, or when you hit a dip at highway speeds, and it goes up and down more then once, its time to replace.

I think aaks38 was actually asking HOW to do it, meaning a write up past the Bentley manual...

Oh, I noticed that all right...but I conveniently skipped to his last sentence.

"Also is there a way to tell ride wise when the struts are worn".

Thing is many cars nowadays are so stiffly sprung that its so hard to see a lack of rebound in the struts/shocks and see ecessive bounce.

Ive replaced the struts and shocks in my Jetta and was wondering if its similar but noticed there wasnt any writeup yet..

It's completely different, but actually a lot easier than a Jetta.

On the fronts, you disconnect the strut from the hub carrier and anti-roll bar at the bottom, and undo the four M8 nuts on the top mount and the whole assembly drops out.

The back is similar at the bottom, but at the top there are four M10x25 bolts that attach the assembly to the subframe, which is a little difficult to access, but not too problematic.

Getting the coils of the dampers is a royal PITA. You need a serious spring compressor.

loose strut mounts...

my car has a constant rattling sound on even small bumps which I was told is a loose strut mount, something having to do with the front right suspension. Other parts were thoroughly checked and OK.I didn't understand why they couldn't just tighten it, nor did I want to pay them $1200+ for new front suspension including new mounts and an alignment.
Seems it's not a safety issue... what's the worst that will happen if I just ignore it on this high mileage (112K) car? I'm planning on keeping it until something major breaks on it.
