Passenger mirror not returning to set position

Here is something that I can't seem to figure out why it is happening.

I have followed the directions in the Owner's manual on how to program seat and mirror memory positions to a particular key.

I am the only person that drives my car regularly I have my settings programmed to the #3 memory button.

Here is what continually happens everytime I get into the car the passenger side rear view loses its set position after I shift into reverse. If I move the mirror back the position I wanted it in and set it to a memory button when I shift out of reverse the mirror moves back the position it wants to (lets call it's own default). You might say well if you have the position set then just hit the memory button again, but that does not work, it will stay in the "default position" that it moves into after shifting from R to D.

I have reprogrammed the memory setting and the key several times and I always get the same result. The desired postion until I shift into reverse.

One other observation I have made is if you park the car without locking all day or overnight, it dumps all the saved memory positions and goes to a default.

I have an '04 V6 if that helps.

I will see if I can find a solution to my niggling issue. I have three keys so I will use another one today and programs the settings to #1 and see if the same thing happens.

Any theories, observations or ideas are welcome.

If you have the mirror set knob on the passenger side, the mirror will move down and out to help you see when backing up. After you put the tranny in drive the mirror will go back to its setting. To stop this, move your mirror adjustment knob to the middle position.

Are you setting the memory while your Treg is in Park or in Drive or in Reverse? If memory serves me right, to set the mirror memory you have to have it in the Drive or Reverse gear to set it. (?)

Personally, I gave up a long time ago... Let us know if you figure it out.

Good luck

I'm having the same issue, my wife and I share the Touareg and her mirror setting is panned closer to the car. When I get in the seat and drivers mirror change but I have to hold the mem#2 button to get the passenger mirror to move. I'm out of warranty and this has only started about 2 months ago. Not a big problem to me, but a hassle nonetheless. FWIW I have the Euro convex mirrors…don’t think that has any bearing but who knows.

If you leave the control knob in the middle position that turns on the mirror heat and you will shorten the life of the mirror heating considerably.

If you don't want the back-up feature on the passenger mirror then once you have all mirrors adjusted, leave the control knob in the left mirror position.

FYI...both my outside mirrors were adjusted for my wife (memory #1) and myself (memory #2) while in the park position of the transmission.

Good luck.

I have another problem, similar to this topic.

My mirror stays in the back up position after I drive away, i need to adjust it up to get to where I like it. Any idea what is causing this?

I have noticed if you shift out of reverse before the mirror gets all the way down, it won't return to the normal position.

Never noticed that the mirror wasn't all the way down, so much for the quick exits! I will see if this is the problem.

Since yesterday I have realized the my car now will not retain the settings for unlocking all the door and lift gate. I have tried it with all three of my keys and the setting keep reverting to the default setting everytime the car is locked.

something must be failing! what is the module that stores the setting?

I think the comfort settings are retained in the gauge cluster. I have used this little trick and it seems to be working fine now.

1) Get in and start the Touareg.

2) Program your comfort settings using the menu system in the MFI.

3) Save your seating position to one of the three memories using the buttons on the side of the driver's seat.

4) Turn off the ignition, remove the key, and exit the Touareg.

5) Close the driver's door, and lock the door by physically inserting the metal key into the door and turning it.

Let us know if you try this and it works.
