Oil Pressure Switch Malfunction

Just wanted to post this problem on my 2009 TDI for info/reference purposes.

Symptoms: Driving along and all of a sudden the MFI reports a continuously flashing Check Engine/Service now condition along with a constant on CEL light (CurlyQ Glow Plug light), along with a Limp mode indication (Can't go over 2500 RPM). Initially for a brief moment, it also flashed an Oil Pressure Switch malfunction noticed, but if you were not watching the MFI at that instant you would miss it.

The 1st time it happened, I immediately pulled over, shut down, and checked the oil (just to be safe), because all I caught of the brief message was Oil Pressure. It was fine. I restarted and everything had cleared. Got it home, hooked up the VAGCom and dumped the codes (see below). I took it into the dealer (40mi one way), giving them a copy of the codes (BTW, I am not sure they really care for this per the reaction I got), which I did not clear, and explaining the sequence of events.

They kept it for 2 days, called me back up and said they drove it multiple times but could not reproduce the problem. I pointed out that they had the diagnostic indicator from the very expensive highly technical vehicle that is telling them the oil pressure switch is bad, so why not go with that. They said nope, they have to be able to duplicate the problem. I expressed my displeasure and pointed out that this could get me stuck on the side of the road and it will also cost me time/aggravation for another service call. The reply was, "Well you do have free towing". I took it home.

The 2nd time it happened was less than 300mi later when I was on the highway bringing my wife home from back surgery. There was no way I was going to stop or pull over, so I limped home (VWOA, if you are watching, this speaks to my earlier point above). Took it back in, this time it faulted multiple times on the way in, clearing each time I re-started. I drove it into the service bay in a fault condition, grabbed the service manager, and showed him that the problem had been duplicated.

After a few days I got it back. They replaced the associated sensor.

Hello...A question as to how fast were you driving at the time of the fault codes? I got a fault code today twice, but only when I was driving around 70 mph. When driving slower, or when below 2500 rpms, no fault code. I parked the Treg and reved the engine to 2500 rpms and got the fault code which is aying oil pressure too high. Has this happened to you?

Zagg,

1st time I was taking a 110 degree corner, so it was about 20mph. The other times varied, some highway speed, some slower. Sound like you have a different message/issue than I had. Anybody change or add oil recently? If you have a VAGCom, you can dump the codes to see if there are any more clues.

Regards

Terry

Our '09 TDI is currently in the shop for the second time for the same problem. I just got off of the phone with the service dept. and asked them why they thought this was a continuing issue. He didn't know at this point. They have another part coming in and should be fixed friday. If they continue to have the issue they're going to have someone from VW come in and try to diagnose the issue.

Just got off of the phone with the service tech, the part should be here in the am. He said the offending part is the oil pressure regulating valve. I asked if it was a simple issue of the valve/part just reading incorrectly due to being faulty or was the engine actually running low on oil pressure and they confirmed it WAS actually running low on oil pressure.

Is this similar to what everyone else with this issue is seeing?

"How low vs standard pressure?" is what I'd have asked as I'd be thinking about long term damage.

So far we are still good with the replaced sensor (if you are referring to OP)

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Your issue sounds a little different (ie; actually running low on oil pressure per your post) from just the sensor going bad that I saw. Did you ever get anyone called in for support help from VW (per your OP). After that long, I would demand it and that they stay on it until it is fixed (geez, hopefully they at least gave you a loaner). I hope you can get it back soon (fixed)...

I've had this same issue

It began December 15, 2011, at about 52000 miles on my 2010 TDI. The oil pressure indicator and the temperature never varied in the least from where they always read. It has happened three times, each time being corrected by turning the engine off, then back on. Oil level is normal. I'm convinced it's a bad sensor, not a valve. One tech told a previous poster that it was a valve, and that the engine was experiencing low pressure. This is not a satisfactory answer in my mind. If so, how is it that the pressure indicator remains normal?

Did they fit an oil pressure gauge on the 2010 Tdi?

I thought that, like previous Touaregs, it was oil temperature not pressure.

Sounds like the same issue to me. As I had mentioned in the OP, I had to finally drive it in in failed mode because they could not duplicate it the 1st time I took it in and would not work from the fail codes. Maintenance invoice indicates they had to pull the water pump to get at it and then re-install it, and then something about "Guided Functions", which I guess were additional diagnostics. Switch Part# they listed for my 2009 was 059-919-081-D

They should be able to tell if its the valve or the switch/sensor from the codes I would think. If you have access to a VAG-Com, you can match your codes up with the ones I posted and have a little more point-to evidence. At least you went twice as many miles before you had the failure. Good luck.

I had a similar problem, when I accelerated the same indications on the MFI and limp mode. After turning the engine off and on again, no indications on the MFI ans no limp mode until accelerated again. It was the oil pressure switch failing intermittently at high oil pressure, during acceleration.

Same as exact symptoms as strokethis2 happened today truck is just shy of 39,000 miles. sorry to say but this makes me nervous about owning this car for the long haul. Replaced water pump already undr warranty and bluetooth is horrible. Hopefully it will be a simple fix and I can enjoy a trouble free experience.

Hi!
We have the same problem here car will be in a shop Monday 16th Jan. Just over 30K miles. Oil pressure low message shows up when you drive above 2500 rpm. Stop turn the engine off message clears but shows again later.

Don't worry, it may take a little bit, but it will fail again. As it progressed (at least for me), it happened with shorter and shorter intervals in between. Good luck. Mine has still been fine so far since repair about 9mo ago. I truly hope they upgraded the sensor/switch so this does not repeat after another 25k miles.

Luckily (as you know) it is just a restart to clear it. But as I mentioned in my OP, I had to wait for it to fail and take it into the dealer in the failed mode cause they had to see the issue duplicated before they would do anything (they would not go by the codes). So I just drove it there in limp mode PITA...

Got call from Donaldson's Volkswagen same error as last time but they want the tech to bring the car home. No loaner no idea what will be done and when. I was told they offer loaner if I make an appointment kind of hard to do. Called VOA filed a complaint sounds kind of useless. Called warranty company was told that unless dealership finds isue and it is a part that extended warrranty covers I am out of luck. Warranty company rep said that if i wanted I could rent a car on my own and if after diagnoses it may be covered. I thanked him for allowing me to pay for a rental and got off the phone before I lost my cool. I wish i could speak with people face to face at times I think attitudes would be different. Warranty company said it is a Volkswagen plan they are just admistrators of it. Volkswagen said its a third party warranty. I guess nobody stands up for the goods they sell these days Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am quickly losing for dealership and Volkswagen and warranty company can go scratch.
