Newbie questions

Now that we have owned the Treg for 2 weeks I can not figue out some of the features on it. I have tried the search option with no luck. So if you can shed some knowledge on these questions I would be grateful.

Locking rear differential? Is it an option for the 04? And how do you know if it is equipped?

Windows up or down with key outside of vehicle? again is this an option for the 04?

When we first brought it home when you would key off and exit the vehicle the suspension would drop down to load level. It no longer does this. I know I have got button happy and can not figure out how to reactivate this.

Getting ready to do the 20,000 mile service any tips or bits of knowledge about DIY oil change. I have read the thread here about it very informative.

Thanks everyone.

- Locking rear diff is an option on all Touaregs. You will know you have it by looking at the pop-up rotary knob which controls the low/high range selection and differentials. This knob usually resides in the High position, next is Low, then locking center diff. If you have a locking rear diff, there will be an additional position for locking rear diff. It will also show up in your MFI as a solid color rear diff when selected.

- The only way to do windows up/down from outside the vehicle is to insert the key into the driver's door lock, twist and hold either full left or full right. This feature cannot be activated on the Touareg from just the key fob as in other VAG products.

- When you "key off" an exit the vehicle, it should not drop down to loading level - it should maintain the levelk at which it was last set. Not sure what your vehicle was doing before, but sounds like it is performing as it should now.

- Easiest course is to buy the oil yourself (8 quarts of synthetic oil which meets or exceeds VW spec 502.00 (e.g. Mobil 1 0W40 or Castrol Syntec 5W40), bring it to your dealer and have them do the oil/filter change. This will be about $30-$50 (depending on dealer) more than DIY, but you will have a dealer record of having performed the service. Having said that, if you want to assure that it is done right (my dealer assigned minimum wage hacks to the job and always screwed up something - long story) then do it youself. It is not hard and it's rewarding to know it has been done correctly. Keep receipts for oil and filter should they be required in the future. Only "tips" on the DIY oil change would be:

*Use 8 quarts of quality oil
*Be sure to replace both rubber O-rings on the filter housing and its drain plug (both O-rings are included with a new filter)
*Be sure to drain both the upper and lower oil pans and replace both sealing washers - usually only one washer comes with a filter "kit" so you will have to purchase an extra one
*Drain the filter housing first, then the upper oil pan, then the lower oil pan. The oil comes out quickly, so use a large enough drain pan with a wide opening - a 5-gallon bucket works well.
*Observe torque values for all plugs and the filter housing. 10NM for the filter housing drain plug, 25NM for the filter housing and 50NM for both drain plugs.

Thanks for the info. We spent about 3 hours sitting in it tonight learning the navigation system and trying to figure out the options I asked about in the previous post. I do not have a locking rear diff. I did get the windows to work with the key externally. using the wifes key as she exits the vehicle and walks away the doors lock and the suspension drops to load level. When I preform the same procedure the doors lock and suspension does NOT drop. Now I had the battery replaced in the key shortly after the purchase of the vehicle. You say this should not be happening. so we tried it again and with her key it drops and with mine it does not. Crazy, I know but this is what we are witnessing.
I have herd from a friend that there is a module out there for the suspension so you can drive in the lowest setting. Do you know of this and would you recommend it?
Thanks again for your input.
