Help!: Newbie / Buying Advice / Hoping to buy this weekend

Hi All

I've been looking at the Touareg for two years or so, but bought a used (2003) 4.4 BMW X5 because I'd read negative things about the Touareg's reliability.

My BMW, while great handling, has proven vastly spendy to keep on the road - and I'm now considering swapping it out (I've got a buying urge for this weekend!)

I know I want at least "Package 1" with Navigation.

So, a series of questions, your guidance much appreciated

1. I'm considering the V8. I like the fact that the X5 feels fast, and I doubt that's the V6. My mileage isn't high and I don't tow, so I doubt I'd get the cash benefit of the V10 (which is a lot more expensive!!). Does it sound like the V8 is the one to go for?
2. Is there any form of bluetooth / phone integration in any of the options?
3. Is package 2 (the comfort access stuff) worth it?
4. How about air suspension? I've read both really good and really bad reviews....
5. Anyone bought recently, or got an idea of what price I should be pushing for? There seems to be BIG range in this (posts talk about $5k below invoice, $10k manufacturer rebates and so on...)
6. Anything I missed I should be thinking about?

Thanks for your help.... I'm hoping to head out to the dealer in a few hours to take a drive

Best,
Alistair

Yes to the V8. We had a BMW545 so we have experienced that great 4.4L engine. The Touareg V8 would probably meet your needs better than a V6. We have the V6 Touareg and though it is pretty peppy it is nothing like the V8. You could regret having a V6 since you are used to more power.

I think the $5,000 under invoice is for the V10. I don't think they discount the V6 or V8's like that. My experience is that you pay invoice or slightly above. You can go to edmunds.com to get the invoice pricing.

By the way, the Touareg isn't any cheaper to maintain than the X5.

Best wishes

Wow, I am envious that you can just go out there and buy one on an urge! Your questions are really broad but will try to give you some perspective.

1. The V8 certainly gives you great performance that can rival the V10 at less initial cost. I have the 3.6L V6 which meets my needs very well at still less cost. I tow a bass boat frequently and do a good amount of 4 wheeling in the mountains. The V6 is very quick, willing, and sound. On the other hand, the mileage difference between the V6 and V8 is negligible. I would drive both and see the differences.

2. Bluetooth is not part of the otions available. Of course, many here have added the capabilities fairly easily. There are many threads here detailing how they have accomplished.

3. You will have to make your own call on the options and accessories that you desire and are willing to pay for.

4. There will be some debate on the desirability of the Air Suspension, but for me, this is probably the main reason that I drive a Touareg. I also think the ride is superior to steel suspension, but many will disagree with that opinion.

5. Deals and prices vary greatly depending on your location, available vehicles, etc. Being in a hurry may not help you get a good price. i would suggest that you go to the VW website and go through the Build Your Own process to see exactly what you want and cost. If you are looking at pre-owned, then later years are most desirable. Early 04's are the least desirable reliability wise and each later year is better.

You will also find that Touaregs are expensive to maintain and to repair if and when needed. Because of this vehicles sophistication and expense of repair, I would NEVER drive it without an original or bumper to bumper extended warranty.

Good luck and let us know how you come out.

Rick

I just purchased a 05-V8 with 21,000 miles. It has all the options except rear view camers. I paid 31,000. If you look around you will find what you are looking for. I went with Carmax because of the selection and locations. By getting a low milage unit you will still have the factory warentee to fall back on.
