DIY: Touareg 3.2L V6 Oil Change

Tools Needed:

7 quarts of oil (I used Castrol 5w-40)
Oil Filter
Crescent Wrench for drain plug (Plug is 19mm)
36mm socket
Socket extension
6mm hex
T-27 torx bit

Procedure

1. Belly Pan removal.

There are 6 torx screws. Remove the rear most belly pan.

2. Drain Plugs

On your back looking up, the left black piece is the oil filter housing and oil filter housing drain plug. To the right it is the oil pan drain plug.

3. Drain Oil Filter housing

Using the extension and the 6mm hex socket, remove the drain plug of the oil filter housing. A steady flow of oil will come out for a minute or so. Replace the drain plug and tighten

4. Oil Filter housing removal

Use the 36mm socket and extension to remove the oil filter cap. Once this is removed, snake the housing cover and old oil filter out.

5. Oil Filter and o-ring replacement

Replace the O-ring from the bottom of the oil filter housing cap and pull the old oil filter out by pulling away from the housing.

Install the new oil filter by pushing it firmly back into the housing. Also note the new O-Ring installed.

Installation is reverse of removal

6. Oil Drain Plug Removal

Use a crescent wrench or if you have a slim 19mm socket to remove the drain plug. Remember, lefty loosy righty tighty.

Replace the drain plug and tighten. Replace belly pan.

7. Pour oil into the engine...you're done!

This was posted a long time ago but I have a question as I am about to do it; my main question is:
1- is it not easier to remove drain the oil from the pain before draining the filter?
a member of the forum asserted that the oil shoots horizontally from the filter which seems messy and I can't think of a way to control that and direct the spurts towards a draining oil pan since the filter is located so high that an extension is necessary to access it.
How long did it last?

Perhaps a mod can reinsert the pics in the post.

I had saved this post locally many years ago when I had a beautiful shadow blue 2004 V6.

Just changed my oil this weekend. I always drain the pan first. Oil shoots out horizontally further than you would think so don't put your catch pan right by the drain plug. I then drain the filter, oil comes straight down and should not go horizontal. I put my catch pan right below.

I don't even jack up the car. Probably easier if you jack up however have never had a problem getting to filter sliding in from the front drivers side.

I recently purchased a 11 VR6 Treg and will soon need oil/filter change, can someone verify the 3.2L and 3.6L VR6 have same or very similar procedure for oil/filter change?

It's the exact same. They only real difference is the 3.6 have a power steering line that runs under the filter housing which just adds to the mess of draining and removing the filter.

My suggestion is use a piece of cardboard to direct the oil away from the steering rack and subframe when you drain the filter housing.

All of the tools needed are the exact same though.
