Broken passenger mirror

Some of you may remember when I made a post awhile ago about when I broke my passenger side mirror when I clipped a truck mirror with mine. I reported then how expensive the glass was to replace. It cost me well over $300!! Well as a result, at least I think so, of that incident I had one of the turn signal bulbs go out in that mirror. I believe to be from the impact.

I got my oil changed today and asked them to replace that bulb for I was afraid of damaging the mirror getting it back out to replace the bulb myself. I dropped my car off with intention of it taken at most and hour to do both procedures. 3 1/2 hours later I call the dealership to find out if they were soon done and maybe forgot to call me. The service rep said it would be done in a 1/2 hour, so I tell my wife to drop me off and I would just wait out the remaining time. I get there and pace about for about a half hour more when the service rep notices I am there and says he is going to check to see if they were done. I saw my Treg back in the bay and notice the guy is still workin on the mirror, I am like wtf. Rep comes back and says he is done and processes my paper work. While he is doin my paper work he says reason it took so long was the tech broke the mirror while takin it out and they had to put a new one in!!! I actually chuckle for that is the reason I wanted them to do it in the first place, so they ate $250 in cost of a new mirror glass and he then tells me the bulb is an LED and falls under warranty!! So I did not even pay for the labor to have the bulb changed!! Sometimes it pays to go to the dealler!!

Good story and happy ending Yeti. I will be sure to have the dealer replace those bulbs should they burnout.

I had a dumb$$^ drift over into my lane in the city a few weeks ago in a 4-runner. As I accelerated past him to get out of the way I wacked his mirror. I pulled over but the guy kept driving. I was worried it broke the mirror and would cost a lot. Turns out it just popped out the mirror from the housing and was hanging from the wires. When I go home I snapped it back into place and the small paint scatch buffed right out. Looks like they enginnered them pretty well.

Yeah, easy to put back in but must be very fragile to take out I guess unless you whack it just right!!

Mirror Rant!

The passenger sideview mirror glass on my '04 V8 was shattered last week due either to a car hitting it or a vandal. The casing was not damaged at all, so I was thinking it can't be too much to replace the glass part that snaps onto the casing and attachs by a couple of wires. Needless to say I was absolutely horrified when my authorized service center technician (there is no dealer w/in 1 hour of me) presented me an invoice for $390.21 ($409.72 with tax!). That is strictly the price of the part - he did not charge me any labor! I vented to the technician that I was expecting the part to be maybe $100-$150, and his response was that he only expected it to be about $85.

Please tell me this is a bad joke! Someone please tell me the justification for this price, and was there any other route I could take. I was afraid to try and buy a used or wrecked part as the technician told me there was more than one sideview Touareg part (he had to get my VIN# to order it)

This is the US price for the auto-dimming mirrors. But for that price I could have also supplied you with the aspherical, auto-dimming mirrors.

I also have my old, US spec auto-dimming mirrors that I could have sold you for much less.

Unfortunately that is the going price from the dealer. I did a little better elsewhere and will give you the link once I get home. Here is the link for the place where I got mine: http://volkswagenpartspeople.com/vol...reg_parts.html .

Thanks Spockcat - I may be able to return the mirror (although I doubt it). Can you quote me a price that you would sell it for? Also, I am not familiar with the aspherical mirrors - how are they better?

If you have the part number handy you can purchase it from the link I posted above for less then the dealer charges.
