Anyone had a Kessy module rebuilt?

There are over a dozen places online that say they will rebuild your ECM like AES provides ECU ECM TCM PCM BCM Control Modules Automotive Electionic Solutions Main and ECU/ECM/TCM/BCM/ICM Rebuilding Service and Auto Computer Systems - quality auto ecu, tcu, & ebcm units, engine control units/modules/computers(ECU,ECM,ECC) & transmission control units(TCU,TCM,TCC to name a few. They say they can rebuild it for about $400. Has anyone tried that? It would sure save the cost and hassle of dealer key reprogramming if the original code was retained.

I don't know is it Ok in US to pay $400 for some cheap radioelectronic parts replacement or not. But I think it's too much.

I had transistor replacement in KESSY unit free of charge in Russia (but because techincian did not repair the main problem) and now I dont have annoing "Key not found" warning. I know a story that one guy in Estonia had the dead KESSY unit repaired for $60 (two transistors and two resistors replacement). But the car prices in US much more adequate then in Russia (almost two times less), so that repairement costs looks not so terrible.

Now I could say that I had KESSY module rebuild. The totall was about 165$ (including parts and labour). One more transistor has been replaced in my KESSY module and everything works fine now. You dont have to pay for the new KESSY ECU, its adaptation and keys matching. Just find good radiotechnician around and you will save a lot for beer, whiskey or whatever you like.

Seeing how the replacement Kessys from the dealer are remanufactured, it’s not surprising they can be repaired. It’s just hard to believe the bad components can be found without sophisticated proprietary test equipment. Sure you can visually tell if a resistor or transistor is burned out but how do you know if the integrated circuits and chip components are good without special equipment?

In my particular case bad transistors and resistors looks absolutely as new ones (not burned out), so nothing you can visually identify. And that is why I paid for that repair - I don't have any knowlege, skills and special equipment to find a problem. But it seems that for radio-engineers its not too hard and ofcorse they have some special equipment for that. But for the official dealer it is not interesting and economically useless to make such kind of repair and sure, most of them even don't have employes who able to do this work. In many cases they only can solve a problem on the trial-and-error basis but at the customers expences.

vwW12, its basically the reliance of "equipement" to do all the work for us that has rendered the northern part of the "west" just stupid. What you wrote reminded me of the story where a man had an overgrown heart here in Canada, and other than the usual medication, and time wasting protocol procedures that did nothing, he seeked this operation in the middle of nowwhere in South America, that the geniouses in Medical institutes of both USA and Canada, ahem, frowned upon. Long story short, they take the heart out, slice down the unwanted overgrown sections, stitch it back up and done. This procedure, as simplistic as it sounds, is a tried and tested method "down there". But no, we in the richer civilized part of the globe no better . Anyways....back to the Kessy module, to me the similiraties of finding trained mechanics who are capable of using their heads is striking in similiarity to todays Doctors in this part of the globe.

Hope I didn't offend anyone on here, but I call them as I see them.

Looking forward to this myself. Mine is now acting up!

Bad run of transistors? I think I've got a different problem as the LR door lock button stopped working after feeling like mush for a few weeks. The other handles worked fine until recently. Often as not now, if I get the other handles to lock the door the car unlocks immediately -- as thought the LR button is shorted out or stuck as, next morning, it works fine again (except for that particular handle).

Hi all,

Bobby78 has assisted my through testing my Kessy. I have completely tested all components in circuit around the 2 MOSFETS. apart from replacing the FETS, I have not been able to isolate the issue.

If there is a bad batch, can someone tell me the month and year the devices were in circuit that are bad.

Also, no one has actually worked out what the MOSFET's do, are they the pushpull drivers for low frequency proximity antennas?

For several weeks now, I have tried to reverse engineer kessy sections, and the MOSFET components section does not have anything to do with key not found, if anything, your keyless system operates around 400MHz, whereas the MOSFET circuit operates at much lower frequencies.

To-date I have not been able to find any functional description on the Kessy, obtain schematics, thus non the wiser. I am not prepared to spend big dollars, however I will replace the MOSFETS this week, cheap investment if they work.

If the replacement of MOSFETS fix my issue, we as a collective group need to provide feedback to VW and it is in their interest to properly diagnose Kessy issues and rectify design errors. :anger:

Regards

Gerald

access auth module

i have a similar problem, when i driving there are " move selector to parking position" coming out. so i bring it to vw delership, they said my access auth module(kessy module?) was bad which i need to change a new one also. hey man, its so costly --! $1000!!!!! just a module???:confused: now, i want to order one from other delership insted of cost $1000 doing my delership. ( sorry for my poor english)

Before you order new KESSY ECU just ask the dealer to show you VAS printout, just to be sure what is wrong with you KESSY. Your case is the first, known to me at least, with such symptoms of KESSY ECU problem. "Move selector to parking position" warning basically shouldn't be anyhow connected with access authorization system. Do you have a Start/Stop button in you Treg? The start/stop system also controlled by KESSY ECU and should be depended of transmission selector position.

Is there any body out that ., that can find a source or send me to a place to order those 0.22 ohm resistors., I have been looking around for a long time and couldn't find out.,

I have swapped out the two mofset brought the control unit back life from no communication from scan tool to all antenna error (that means the control unit actually can talk to the scan tool now)

I assume the few resistors needed to replace too but I cannot source those resistors.

thanks

Did you try Mouser?

The kessy is identical, I replaced my kessy with one I bought from the Porsche dealer. It came in a Porsche box but the kessy module itself has the VW logo and exact same markings as the defective one that came out of my Touareg.

I was lucky, I didn't have to replace any.
You could just measure them with ohm meter since they're close to a short it will be very obvious if it's blown open.
Good luck soldering, those thing are so small.
Cheers.
Question to Krakonosh and Bobby78.

My Kessy lost communication with the antennas long ago. So...

How to find out which resistors went kaput? Surely, the two transistors will have to be replaced, but there are quite a few resistors on that thing...

Thanks!

P.

ok i'm willing to take a look inside Kessy as I'm pretty handy with the soldering iron. My question is: Am I looking in the right place? It's never worked (as far as keyless entry) so I just assumed it was the antennas. Then one day I happened to grab the door handle with the key in my hand and poof door locked and unlocked when I tried again. I was stunned. of course, now it doesn't work again. ever once in awhile I get a "key battery dead" warning. So my question is... is it my FOB instead of kessy?

I noticed my keyless entry is unreliable in cold weather, like below freezing. Also, I wore out one of the door buttons, the plastic spring no longer works (under the key cap). If I press that one while it's too cold, the other doors won't work. It seems like the worn out button jams the inputs for the other doors. In fact, sometimes the car won't lock as it will lock and immediately unlock. Very frustrating!

you might be able to fix this problem by replacing the spring in the button. visit to a good indy shop.

actually, unless you replace the spring in the button, you are in it for a lot of $$$ if you want to get it fixed at your VW dealer. Check this out: I am almost certain they no longer carry "old-style" door handles, which means your fix will require a new handle, which has an updated antenna. But (!) the new handle will not work with the old Kessy. This means you have to replace all the handles and the Kessy... FYI, the replacement handles come unpainted from the factory and have to be painted to match your color ($$$ just keep adding up as we speak about the "proper" repair of your sticking door handle button at the dealer).
