Question 40K Mile Service for my 2004 V8 - Prices to expect to pay?

So I went online to two of our local VW dealers websites today to use their online scheduler feature and price out my 40k mile service on my V8.

One dealer said $430 and the other $380, obviously I am going to go to the cheaper dealer.

What I am wondering is can I expect to pay the $380 + Tax and that is it?

Or are there other hidden costs and am I going to end up paying a LOT more?

Be prepared to shell out some $$$.This is my thread on the vortex a while back:
VWvortex Forums: $600 for 40K service?????Help?

In summary my local dealer wanted $599 plus tax, and I had it done at another dealer for $285 total. Be careful that they dont try to get you for sparkplugs. Those are due at 60K for the V8, not 40K like many other makes/models of vw.

I still think it is a rip off.

Multipoint inspection? Takes 5 min
oil change?$90
rotation? $15
filter $25 +10 min
So $130 and 25 extra minutes labor costs $380

Buy your own oil and filters and find a good shop. This one should save you $200 on the 40k

nltomba-

In a pure sense, I'd have to agree. There is nothing magical there at 40k. Looks like I paid about 125.00 too much.

oil/lube/filter 85.00
cab filter 28.00
nys inspect 21.00
tire rotation 20.00
air filters 41.00
key fobs 16.00

Oh well...gotta pay something for the convenience (or the inconvenience I'm sure I'd have encountered schlepping it on my own). In my case, the dealer is pretty square with me, so I don't quibble over every invoice. Too busy. In and out. Time is money, too.

I'm sucking it up and paying the $425 on Thursday for the 40k mile service.

I went to Jiffy Lube tonight and after 30 mins of them effing around they tell me they don't have the oil filter that will fit and none of the auto parts stores in the area have one either. WTF?! This is a major metropolitan area!

So I will sleep a little better knowing the stealership is doing the work.

Oh and in a fit of rage tonight while using my horn it stopped working! GRRRRRRRRRR!

Just picked up the T-Reg from the dealer tonight, price was $405 after all taxes and everything.

They fixed my horn under warranty, except I am kinda irked because they put an "American Car" sounding horn in it, before the horn was a very like high pitched horn, now it is the typical blaring horn.

You took it to Jiffy lube???

I bet a fine mineral oil would have been added(about 8 quarts) and the 2nd oil plug would have been forgotten so you would have 1 quart too many in it?

40K Service costs

I guess seven months is a long time in the service business. I called three dealers today about my upcoming 40K service. Local (only) dealer quoted $687.00. When I pointed out it's a V8 and plugs are another 20k away, he revised his initial price to 650.00, then said he would drop $70 for the plugs cost bringing my new total to $580 plus tax. This from the only local VW dealer. The next dealer 65 miles away quoted $485.00. And the furthest dealer (3 hours away) quoted $500.

I am going to go back to the local guy one more time and ask them to give me their best price. The service guy says he doesn't have control over the numbers; they're preprogrammed. All he can do is hit one button on the computer. I even told him he was the most expensive. But then this is a dealership that thinks adding "limited model" markups of $2500-5000 above retail on some models is fair since well, they're the only game locally.

What's the latest prices everyone else has recently paid for their 40k service? You would think they would maybe offer to split the $100 diff and keep my business local. By the way thanks for the replies and comment.

I just did the 40K with my local dealer. Didn't even ask what it was before I took it in. Out the door around $240. I bought my CPO from an out of state dealer, so I have spent some quality time developing a relationship with my dealer and they always treat me well. Whenever I have had a warranty problem (new battery, battery gauge) they have been prompt and courteous). That's how I have approached my dealership. A few hundred bucks for scheduled service goes along ways toward building a solid win-win relationship that will pay off in the long run.
