Hello folks,

I love my Touareg but this sound is really driving me crazy.

Every time I start driving my car, one mechanically "bang" sounds from the front or some place under the car. It is always just one time, it sounds like some mechanical parts are locking togehter or something like that.
It will give me a lot of piece of mind if I could find out what causes this.
Is this normal? Anyone else that has this "feature"?

My car is fitted with gas-dampers and the full off-road package.

Best Regards

I have the stock wheels on my 05 V6 (255/60/17) and it is about time for some new tyres. After reading most of the posts on tyres I am leaning towards Michelin Latitude HP, Goodyear Triple Tred or the Hankook Ventus tyres. Various posters like the Ventus ST very much but Hankook only make the AS in the 255/60/17 size. Would the positive comments about the ST also apply to the AS?

Any other suggestions for tyre choice would be appreciated. I live in the Caribbean so no snow.

The current tires are in good shape and so are the wheels and since my wife will drive T-Reg, I am actually kind of happy in has 17s less curb rash :)

But in case a good deal pops up, what 18 inch rims were stock on a 2007 V8 U.S. model? Pictures would be great if you have them.

Current wheels:

Hi, how important is max load in choosing a tire. I was on some sites and they state you should not go below the OEM tire max. load range. If that is the case then I cannot find any tire with that number( Scopions STR 2459lbs) Is there a formula for calculating this?

Is this important? Would a tire close to that help in longevity of the tire life? I do not tow at all.

Confussed

Anyone else run in to issues with the tire inflation hose for the air compressor on an air sprung Touareg? My hose seems to attach just fine but fails to register as connected on the MFI regardless of how I sequence the connections and ignition. This means it won't run the compressor based on triggering the valve on the hose. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? Is there a contact point that the hose fitting isn't hitting that would tell the compressor it's connected? I can hear and feel air going in to the hose itself once it's screwed down far enough but I can't generate any air via the fill valve.

Hi,

I have a weird and a bit scary problem with my Touareg '05. Last week I had the car aligned and tires + rims changed from the stock 19" (275/45/19) to a more fashionable 20" (275/40/20). Both tires are Continental SportContact 4x4.

Soon after the change I was driving relaxed @ around 90 km/h when suddenly there was a 'bang' and the engine went up in revs. The reason for this was that the gear get 'stuck' on 3rd. On the dashboard the emergency light of ESP went on. After stopping the car and restarting the engine, the error was gone and all was well. A couple of days later the same thing happened again, a 'bang' and this time the gear was fixed on 6th. I did notice the engine warmup light coming on briefly.

I feels like some sort of emergency loop where the car notices something wrong and falls back to some sort of safety setting.

Did anyone experience something similar and/or have any idea how to resolve this? The frustrating part is that it seems to happen at random.

I ordered an OEM skid plate from ECS tuning for $36 and installed it. While installing it I realized that it blocks the holes for the tow eye. This is stupid to me. I know it is only for looks (doesnt add any protection whatsoever) but I like the look and I had to drill some holes/cut away some plastic to install it and I already bought it so I want to leave it on there. Does anyone else have this skid plate installed? If so, do you just deal with not having front tow eyes or did you drill holes in the skid plate for the tow eye?

I dont do a whole lot of offroading, just getting through the mud at my ranch to get to the cabin and get the jeep; going to the beach, etc. But im sure I will get stuck some day and dont want to be stuck without a way to be towed out.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

 Hi, it has come time to find new tires for our 2008 V6.The OEM Pirelli Scorpion STR 255/60R/17 are just about done with only 45,000 kms on them. I find them to be good in the snow, but noisy on the highway now. I have maintained the tires well, but they just seem to not last. I see on their website they are warrantied for 100km.

I have looked around on this forum and have narrowed it down to the following tires.

Michelin Latitude Tours,

Nokians WR SUV I realize that I would have to change size to 255/65/17. If someone could explain what that change will mean to me driving/size wise and anything else.

I'm looking for decent economy, snow traction and low noise levels.

If anyone has any other brand I should look at please let me know.

Thanks of the help

... That is the question!

Changing out to 17" wheels from 20's. I do go off road, Tahoe snow in the winter, rough dirt track exploration in the summer, more mixed terrain than mud, or sand. Baja too... 245's would be better for snow and mud, but I'm a fan of lots of rubber contact patch when towing and stopping.

The 245's also are about an inch smaller in diameter than 265's which doesn't make sense to me. I like a bigger tire, but am worried about the dealer given me grief with 'oversize' tires. Also, don't want to trade too much fuel mileage.

Looking at either the Silent Armor or Revo 2. Do the 245's "look" wide enough after coming from 275's

Obviously a very subjective questions, all thoughts welcome and appreciated.

I've been talking about this for a while now, ( http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f4...rns-32652.html )but I finally took the plunge on some 16" steel wheels off a T5 Transporter. The wheels are in good condition, but were full of scratches. I didn't like the colour anyway (plain steel wheel silver), so I decided to have them painted.

The guy who's painting them for me gave me one back last week, just to see if I'm happy with the colour before he paints the rest. The colour I chose is very similar to the car (Off-Road Grey) but a couple of shades darker. It's also a standard VW colour. I also got a used set of 265/75R16 Maxxis Bighorns, just to do a trial fit. Once I have all 5 wheels back, I'll go do a couple of trails to see what it's like.

The pics show the result. I have 1/2" clearance between the intercooler vent and the tyre at full bump, so it won't touch anywhere. This is a 31.8" tyre and I suspect the fact that I've lifted the Treg 40mm with the Seikel kit, gave me a bit of extra clearance.

If all goes according to plan, I'll fit some new tyres sometime next year, but it won't be Maxxis. Top of my list right now is BFG Mud Terrain KM2's. Their 265/75R16 has a Q (160km/h) speed rating, where the Maxxis's are only M (130km/h) rated. The BFG is also slightly bigger (31.9") but I have enough clearance to fit them. Both have 3-ply sidewalls.

In the mean time I'll swap betweeen the 17" and 16" sets as required. Hopefully this will save the paintwork on my 17" Canyons.

All I need to do now is make a plan with a center cap or something.
